Dean "Stump" Pinheiro
Dean Pinhiero, better known to his friends as
Stump, has been campaigning the same car for almost 40 years. Originally painted
Orange (we called it the Halloween Machine) and powered by a small block 327
with a four speed. We could always tell when Stump made a run even if we were in
the pits thrashing on our own car. Seems the house wiring he had used to wire
the ignition was not the thing. It would miss all through the gears. Some one on
our crew would say "There goes Stump, shootin' ducks again". I remember one time
I watched him creep into the light a little too far and over staged. He put 'er
in reverse and backed into the beam. I'm thinking, Stump, back all the way out
and restage. Well he didn't. At the green he dropped the clutch an made a nice
reverse burn out, slammed on the brakes and jammed it into, you guessed it,
third gear. Revved 'er up and dropped the clutch again. Well obviously she
bogged. He power shifted into first and shot ducks all the way through the
traps. We laughed about that run for years. Of course it was funnier if you
where there and know what kind of guy Stump is. Easily excitable. Oh yeah, he
lost that round too.
